Love is in the air and the iPhone and App Store together is the latest hotbed for conveying your feelings to your Valentine this year. There have been a lot of Valentine apps coming this year at the App Store. The latest to jump into the Valentine bandwagon is R. Cloud Software’s Create a Valentine. Now what is special about this app when there is a host of other valentine apps? Well, this one uses the same creative combination Steve Bjorkman and Ryan Stubblefield which created the liltingly creative Create-a-Cartoon Face application. Bjorkman’s greetings have been among the very best in the business for more than 25 years now. No wonder, these gift cards are a class apart.

NBA bans in-game Twittering

The National Basketball Association is instituting a policy regarding Twitter and other social media sites, banning players from using them during games.

The league sent a memo to teams on Wednesday telling them that cell phones and other communication devices can't be used from 45 minutes before game time until after players have finished their responsibilities after games. That includes halftime.

The rule applies to "coaches, players and other team basketball operations personnel." NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the memo and its contents.

The memo does not specify penalties for violation of the rule, and says teams are free to create their own policies for practices and other team events.

The NBA has more than 1.4 million followers on Twitter, and many players are active on it.

Windows Apps for Facebook

Facebook Desktop
A Windows-only app, Facebook Desktop provides real-time updates, lets you see wall posts, view messages, and read friend requests. It's one of the best-looking apps, too.

Facebook Photo Uploader
The folks at the Google Code Base have a neat little desktop app for Windows users that allows them to upload photos directly to Facebook and tag them before they get to the service. It's not the best-looking app, and it's a little buggy, but I'm impressed by its ease of use.

Facebook Tray Notify
Sometimes, a desktop client just gets in the way. If you feel that way, turn to Facebook TrayNotify. It's a lightweight app that sits in your taskbar awaiting Facebook notifications. Once it receives them, alerts pop up, letting you know about the updates. If you want to act on them, you'll need to go to the Facebook site to do so.

FBLook
FBLook is useful, if you're an Outlook user. Besides filling you in on friends' status updates, you can update your own Facebook status, and see notifications and requests without going to the Facebook Web site--it all works within Outlook on your desktop. Although I'm running a Mac every day, I still use FBLook whenever I run my Windows machine. In fact, it's one of the first apps I fire up.

FBQuick
If you're looking for a nicely designed app that will work on your Windows PC and give you some of the best functionality around, look at FBQuick. The app sends you profile notifications, including tagged photos, pokes, and messages, but it doesn't allow you to update anything while on your desktop.

Fonebook
If you're an Outlook user, and you have a mobile phone that supports Outlook, check out the Fonebook app. Once installed on your desktop, the app will transfer your contacts and photos from Facebook to Outlook. The app copies a contact's photo, Facebook profile URL, the "About me" details, and status. That can then be synced with an Outlook-compatible phone so whenever someone calls, the person's picture and information will pop up on your mobile-phone screen.

MySpace, Microsoft also announce plans for Windows Mobile-based MySpace app

MySpace Inc. and Microsoft Corp. today announced that developers can now build MySpace applications using Silverlight, Microsoft's plug-in for developing multimedia and rich Internet applications.

The companies also said that a MySpace application for Windows Mobile that uses Silverlight will be released in a few months.

Microsoft and MySpace have released code that will help developers build OpenSocial applications using Silverlight that run on the MySpace Open Platform. OpenSocial is a platform for developing applications for social networking sites and is supported by MySpace, Google, Yahoo, LinkedIn, Friendster and others.

Previously, MySpace had not formally supported Silverlight. Silverlight-based applications built for MySpace have long required that users download a player in order to run applications that use the technology.

MySpace also said that it will release an application for Windows Mobile in a few months that will also use Silverlight. MySpace applications now run on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Palm and Nokia devices, but not the Windows Mobile platform.

MySpace said it will also release an application for the forthcoming Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5, an update to the operating system expected to come in the second half of this year. In addition, LG Electronics, which recently announced that it would launch 50 Windows Mobile phones in the next four years, said that it will preload the MySpace application onto those phones.

The companies disclosed few details about the new mobile application, saying only that it will deliver rich content and data and will integrate the main social features and functionality of MySpace into the Windows Mobile operating system. They plan to offer more details about it and about developing Silverlight applications for MySpace during a session at the CTIA conference in Las Vegas this week.

Microsoft announced last year that Nokia would be the first device maker to use Silverlight on mobile phones. Early last year, Microsoft also announced that it was working on supporting Flash, Adobe's multimedia runtime that is the predominant application for building multimedia Internet applications.
